data M and the new Millennium

Everbody is talking about the year 2000 problem (Y2K) and whether the software he is using is able to manage this magic number. But what´s about the software developer? "Will my software supplier be able to stand the challenges the new millennium brings us?" users might ask themselves.

The data M group has been doing a lot of preparatory work in order to continue with its success also in future. Over the past 11 years the product portfolio of data M Software has grown from CAD-systems for the design of sheet metal parts to complete process chains for the rollforming and sheet metal industry.

Quality control systems, optical inspection systems and special purpose machine development by data M Engineering completes this portfolio and proof our technical competence.

Serving customers in 43 countries worldwide and offering software solutions in currently 7 languages, data M is prepared to operate in a new global market. However - growth also requires more space. data M is currently running out of space in its Taufkirchen/ Munich based office (500 sqm; 4400 square feet).

Therefore we are going to move in spring 1999 (estimated completion) to our new office building having about 1100 sqm (10,000 square feet) of space. The new office is located in the village Valley (also south of Munich).
Dont´t wonder if you will get your software not from Silicon Valley, but from data M, Valley/ Germany.

Sheet Metal Unfolding with COPRA MetalBender SOLVER

COPRA MetalBender SOLVER is an effective Mechanical Desktop- or AutoCAD application for the calculation of unfolded sheet metal blanks. It is a low budget software module especially designed for smaller companies where sheet metal parts have to be designed only occasionally.
The matured CAD systems AutoCAD and Autodesk Mechanical Desktop have got quite powerful  features even for the design of sheet metal parts. There is just one function missing: a software which calculates the unfolded patterns - taking into account all the technical parameters required.
COPRA MetalBender SOLVER presents you exactly these features. It calculates accurately the neutral length of every bending zone according to DIN, material parameters, machine correction tables or just your company specific experienced values. The unfolded geometry - including overbend angles and -radii are being calculated within seconds.

The user may also get separate unfolded contours for top- or bottom surface of the sheet metal part. This is particularly important if you are handling complex intersections or if an object intersects a sheet metal part under an angle. The resulting  curves are calculated in a way which allows a later assembly of both (sheet metal part as well as intersecting object) taking into account a perpendicular laser- or flame cut.

Laser cutting technology for cutting sheet metal blanks is beeing used at an increasing extent. In order to minimise the cutting time, the unfolded pattern should have as many tangential transitions as possible. In this case the cutting device is able to with with constant speed without the need to slow down. Every non-continuous curve forces the laser cutter to slow down and increases the cutting cycles. This is the reason why COPRA Metalbender SOLVER offers you various possibilities to take into account these production-specific restrictions.

You may, e.g. minimise the number of suporting points of respective contours, or have the calculated intersection curves automatically converted into arc elements having tangential transitions. Another possibility is, to have all bending areas of you contour automatically converted into circular elements. Such features allow the user to raduce the cutting time required drastically. If, in some cases, the calculated result provided by CMB SOLVER does not meet the user´s expectations, CMB SOLVER provides you with additional tools for verifying and modifying the flat pattern. Respective changes are done automatically. For the bending process, CMB SOLVER provides you with inferface files for nc-programming. Different types of control unit are available.

Sheet Metal Design and Unfolding with COPRA MetalBender Desktop

COPRA MetalBender Desktop allows a 100% parametric design of sheet metal parts. This is especially interesting, if you plan to derive a certain number of variants from your part. In the following section, we are showing an example explaining some major functions of CMB Desktop.
Definition of parameters

Compared to the ´conventional design process´ the preparatory work is a bit more if you decide to go for a parametric design. This is due to the fact that the user has to think about and to define the number of parameters he likes to work with later on.
In our example we are now defining the describing parameters we need for our sheet metal part. By the way:  the user may define these parameters afterward as well. Generating the basic plate
Usually a design starts with a basic plate, which might be a simple rectangle or a contour plate having punches or notches. COPRA MetalBender Desktop automatically provides you with the neccessary functions and generates a 3D model, taking into account the given values.
Addition of flanges
For a quick and easy design of sheet metal parts the user may select from so-called flange-features. Thus, you are able to define even complex shapes in an easy way. Follwing types of flanges are available:

Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte) standard flange (not rounded)
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte) rounded flange
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte) various Z-profiles
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte) profile- and special shape flanges.

Of course every type of flange supports  production-specific restrictions - e.g.joined flange, inserted flange, relieve angles or distances. Every entry, e.g. height or angle can be defined either as fixed value or as a variable parameter. Using the flange menues, the user needs not to take care how to - e.g. - close corners. This job is done by one of COPRA MetalBender Desktops helpful functions.

Link to a spread sheet or table

The parameters defined by the user can be linked to a table. This enables the user to enter new variants having different parameters and dimensions

 Verknüpfung.gif (14103 Byte)
Defining variations by entering different parameters
Variante1.gif (14811 Byte)
Variation of designed sheet metal part

The parameters entered in the table as ´variation 1´have just to be activated in Autodesk Mechanical Desktop and are automatically taken into account. The designers does not need to put hands on the designed part. He gets the new sheet metal part having the actual dimensions. Even the corner geometry is recalculated and accurately positioned.

COPRA Deformation Technology Module
"How precise is COPRA´s rollform simulation?"
- data M is being asked frequently. In order to verify this question, the software has been compared to theoretical and practical experiments. A practical test has been performed at Technical University of Darmstadt/ Germany. The job was done within a funded by data M and rollforming companies on behalf of the ´Studiengesellschaft Anwendungstechnik Stahl´ in Düsseldorf/ Germany. A U-Section was formed progressively on a research rollforming mill in three steps. The resulting longitudinal deformations were measured by a set of strain gauges and documented on a computer system. The experiment described in detail:

Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte)Profile section: U75/100/75 x 4mm
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte)Forming steps: 0, 30, 60 and 90 degrees
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte)Tooling diameters: bottom roll 180 mm; top roll 420 mm
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte)Side rolls: 180 mm
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte)Distance of forming passes: 450 mm
Bluesmal.gif (873 Byte)Machine: experimental rollforming mill

Following Illustration shows the strain values of the material resulting from the forming curves imposed by the roll tools. These values are - according to the latest technological developments - the reason of undesired deformations.

graph.tif (107310 Byte)

COPRA Deformation Technology Modul - using similar forming parameters (diameters for top- and side rolls, forming steps etc.) - will provide you with following results:

ftm6.gif (72243 Byte)

Of special interest is the almost identical quality of the strain course. Even the numerical results are within the same range as the curves obtained by the strain gauge experiments. Of course - it cannot be stated with upmost certainty, whether the values will behave in the same way also with complex shapes. However, our customer´s feedback has proved in many cases that COPRA DTM is able to increase your products quality. COPRA DTM provides you with these excellent results within a short computing time. Above shown example takes just a few seconds on a standard Pentium processor.

By the way:
No commercial software on the market is able to provide you within reasonable computing time with such results. The known strip edge strain calculation methods will fail. This is because they are not able to take into account parameters like the intermediate curvature of the deformation geometry (not only strip edges!) or tool diameters (e.g. side rolls!) in order to calculate the real forming shape in the rollforming process.
